Black Myth: Wukong - A Mythological Action RPG Adventure

Game Overview and Exploration

Black Myth: Wukong carves its own path in the action RPG genre, drawing from Chinese mythology rather than fitting neatly into the Soulslike mold.

Its structure and pacing feel more akin to modern adventure epics, blending linear storytelling with expansive, explorable zones.

While combat presents a challenge, it prioritizes fluidity and spectacle over relentless difficulty, welcoming players into its rich narrative world.

The true depth of the game lies in its hidden corners, where optional bosses and secrets await those willing to venture off the main trail.

You can experience the core journey in a focused playthrough, but uncovering all its mysteries demands a much greater investment of time and curiosity.

This balance between a guided epic and a world brimming with undiscovered content creates a lasting impression, making the unseen as compelling as the conquered.

Black Myth: Wukong is set to launch on August 20, 2024, available for PC and PS5. Developed internally by Game Science, the game centers on a monkey warrior who wields a staff and is known as the destined one. Your mission is to track down six relics tied to the legendary Sun Wukong, each representing a unique "sense."

The adventure unfolds across five distinct chapters, each featuring its own environment and storyline. There’s also a secret final chapter, which remains under wraps. Players can revisit these areas anytime, adding a layer of freedom to exploration. Collecting the six relics serves as a classic gaming structure that helps organize a complex narrative.

Rather than presenting a straightforward tale, Black Myth: Wukong offers a series of parables and fragments for players to piece together. The storytelling encourages active engagement, inviting players to interpret the events rather than passively absorb them.

For those unfamiliar with the original material, entering the story can feel like jumping in midway through a book. However, this approach enriches the world-building, making the environment feel authentic and inhabited. You sense that your character is just a small part of a larger realm where you can’t control everything. The world is filled with mystical beings—yaoguai, deities, and immortals—who casually transform into creatures such as foxes, cicadas, and birds, adding to the magical atmosphere.

The cast is vibrant and exaggerated, enhancing the game’s irreverent tone. Playing with the Chinese voice acting revealed characters that were deeply expressive, whether charming, detestable, or nuanced. This made the silent protagonist feel somewhat out of place. The English voice acting was solid overall, featuring some notable performances, but it didn’t quite leave as strong an impression.

The experience can initially feel perplexing, especially with multiple endings available, but the conclusion I reached finally made various elements click into place. Even when the narrative seems to diverge, the visuals remain consistently breathtaking. Instead of simply retelling Journey to the West, Black Myth: Wukong captivates by transforming the story into an immersive spatial experience. Each environment is rich with detail—from vibrant forests and serene snowfields to elaborate temples and rugged cliffs—creating a strong desire to discover what lies ahead.

There is an overwhelming amount to explore, perhaps too much, and not enough time to fully engage with it all. Black Myth: Wukong, developed in Unreal Engine 5, excels in blending stylized art with realistic visuals. However, its visual design often falls short in clarity. Many levels are vast, causing encounters and collectibles to feel sparse and spread out, while invisible barriers block seemingly accessible areas. These arbitrary restrictions can turn stunning landscapes into frustrating dead ends. This unpredictability gradually diminishes the thrill of exploration.

Furthermore, the environments are frequently cluttered, making it difficult to spot important items. For example, permanent health pickups can be hidden away in tiny containers within dimly lit rooms filled with distracting particle effects, making them easy to overlook. The game would greatly benefit from a map system and clearer visual cues, such as guiding light beacons, to enhance navigation and player experience.

Gameplay and Combat Mechanics

While exploring, your primary focus, beyond interacting with objects with a button prompt, is engaging enemies that the camera can lock onto. The protagonist, known as the destined one, is a melee-focused fighter whose combat revolves around fixed staff techniques combined with a versatile array of spells.

There is a shared light attack combo that links three distinct staff styles, each possessing its own unique heavy attacks. The default style, called smash, uses focus points to execute powerful overhead slams. Focus points are built temporarily by holding the heavy attack button and can also be permanently charged through skillful combat, including dealing damage and dodging enemy strikes.

Another style, known as pillar, elevates the destined one off the ground, making him untouchable by ground attacks while wielding the staff as a pillar. This style emphasizes area-of-effect sweeps during focus attacks.

The thrust style is particularly notable. It offers quick, long-reaching lunge heavy attacks and features a mid-combo dodge that can seamlessly chain into an invincible follow-up move, making it as effective as it sounds.

Ability points are used to unlock new moves and are allocated within a skill tree divided into core stats, staff styles, and spells. These points primarily come from leveling up by gaining experience points from defeated foes, which is a resource separate from the will currency used for shopping at merchants. Additionally, some points can be earned by discovering meditation spots scattered throughout levels.

A great quality-of-life feature is the ability to respec your skill points for free at any checkpoint. This flexibility allowed me to frequently adjust my build, experimenting with different moves and optimizing for particular armor or staff bonuses.

Running Black Myth: Wukong on a PC with an i7-9700k and RTX 2080 Super, slightly above the recommended specs, I observed an average frame rate of 75 to 80 FPS at 1440p resolution, with the game's super resolution setting at 75 as per its benchmark. The gameplay was mostly smooth, with only occasional minor stutters. However, there was one crash and another forced exit due to an animation glitch. In the final area, frame rates occasionally dropped into the 40s, though I won’t spoil the reason behind this. Loading times felt somewhat lengthy despite using a high-speed M.2 NVMe SSD, but this was not a major issue.

Early in the game, I was eager to gather skill points, but I quickly realized that focusing on mastering a single staff combat style was the most effective approach. The combat system could benefit from more interaction between the three available styles, as the thrusting style became the dominant choice after unlocking it. The pillar style felt awkward to use, and the smash style seemed inferior compared to thrusting. Each style offers only a few new attack nodes, and there’s no option to expand the light attack combos, resulting in repetitive attack animations throughout the game.

Combat can feel repetitive at times, especially since many regular enemies are slow, weak, or easily staggered, making them less challenging. Despite this, the satisfaction of chaining focus heavy attacks and executing perfect slow-motion dodges kept the experience engaging. The sound design significantly enhances the combat, with distinct audio cues like the wooden thud of the staff hitting a shield, the deep gong of cracking armored foes, and the sharp swish during slow-motion boss spins. These detailed sounds create a rewarding feedback loop that amplifies the intensity of fights.

The game truly shines during boss battles, where players face a large variety of impressive bosses, sometimes consecutively. While some bosses reuse assets, the overall audio-visual presentation remains captivating. Levels occasionally feel like brief interludes before the next major encounter. I managed to defeat most bosses on the first try; the final boss took two attempts, and the toughest optional boss required seven or eight tries. Although I’m skilled at action RPGs, the game isn’t overly difficult, though a few bosses suffer from frustrating hitbox issues. The most challenging aspect for me was a particularly tough platforming section, thankfully unique in the game.

Character Progression Mechanics

Beyond its initial skill tree, Black Myth: Wukong offers rich character advancement.

Armor sets grant bonuses, and gear can be upgraded to enhance stats and alter its look subtly.

I favored a dual two-piece armor combination, granting extra focus on perfect dodges and access to the parry-like Rock Solid spell.

Your healing gourd, refilled at rest points, can be expanded for more uses and tailored through various drinks and soaks.

Some drinks trade healing potency for attack boosts or mana restoration, while soaks can amplify healing or reduce status ailments.

Base health, mana, and stamina grow through items often earned from bosses, with further stat customization via collectible, reallocatable stones.

Staffs are upgraded in a Monster Hunter-esque fashion using materials from defeated bosses.

Equippable curios provide stat boosts and conditional attack enhancements.

Gathered resources craft medicines for temporary stat increases or curing ailments, easily stockpiled for boss encounters as vital combat snacks.

This is all before delving into the magic system.

Spells consume mana and have cooldowns, with mana typically refilling only at checkpoints, demanding careful spell management.

While Rock Solid is a standout, Immobilize is equally formidable, freezing enemies and amplifying damage taken with upgrades.

Crucially, it works on bosses, offering free damage, safe healing windows, and combo disruption.

As the first spell unlocked, it sets a high standard.

Though several spells are tied to optional content and can be swapped at checkpoints, I rarely removed Immobilize or Rock Solid, steadfastly relying on time manipulation and defensive counters in this dodge-centric adventure.

Transformation and Combat Mechanics

The most versatile magic lies in the art of transformation

Proper transformations let you briefly become the foes you have defeated

These alternate forms possess their own health pools

Allowing you to deal damage while staying safe

Lesser, equipable spirits offer passive stat boosts

They also function as special attacks tied to a Qi meter

You can weave these spirit attacks into normal staff combos

I discovered nearly fifty different spirits, with only five transformations

I am certain many more of both exist

A core theme is harnessing the strength of your enemies

This introduces a welcome variety to every encounter

My typical flow was: immobilize, staff combo, finish with a spirit

Then immediately launch into a transformed state

Investing in transformations means you can spend most of a boss fight

Playing as anyone but the Destined One

My adoration for Black Myth: Wukong was immense through the first two chapters

Yet recurring irritations and some prolonged sections began to tire me by the midpoint

Combat undeniably carries the experience

The story is intriguing, though too fragmented to build consistent tension

The world itself is a breathtaking place to explore

It is thrilling to see such a rich, culturally deep setting

One that has been largely untapped in gaming

Treated with obvious love and care in an action RPG of this scope

Despite occasional frustrations, the game feels excellent and concludes powerfully

So powerfully that I am tempted to try New Game Plus

If only to uncover the countless things I inevitably missed
